On November 30th, 1990, West Coast IDX (now GE Healthcare) users met to share issues about communication, training, and support from IDX and this became the first organizational meeting for the Western Region User Group (WRUG). The structure of the WRUG and by-laws were developed and remain little changed to this day. Users and IDX staff gathered quarterly in special interest “breakout groups” to discuss application and enhancement issues. New users could get help and experienced users shared notes and no longer had to wait until the annual National User Group meeting. During WRUG’s initial years, the focus was to improve the support IDX provided for their West Coast Clients. Ultimately, this mission proved successful when the West Coast became a Full Service IDX service region in 1995. As the urgent need for experienced support declined, the character of WRUG changed towards a mainstream user group. During the first years of existence, WRUG drew around 60 participants and by the late 1990’s, WRUG meetings have attracted over 200 attendees and this level of participation continues.
